Testing Your Home for Radon in East Lansing, Mi

Radon is a radioactive gas which is released when there is a breakdown of uranium in the water, soil, or rock bed. When released, this gas gets into the air and can be inhaled by everyone around it. One of the most dangerous aspects of Radon is the fact that it can’t be smelled, tasted or seen. When inhaled for long enough, radon plays a role in causing lung cancer. As a matter of fact, it is one of the leading causes of lung cancer in people that do not smoke. As a result, the only way to be aware of the presence of radon in a home is through a professional radon screening. Until a test is carried out, it can be safely assumed that every home has some level of radon.

How does Radon Get into Homes

Generally, radon gets into homes from the soil through cracks and compromises in the foundation. This is possible because the air pressure in the home is less than that in the soil.

  5.
The level of radon in a home is measured by averaging multiple measurements taken over a 48 hour period.

What are Healthy Radon Testing Levels

If after a test has been carried out the level of radon in a home is lower than 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), then, the home is considered safe for its residence.

However, if the level of radon in a home surpasses 4.0 pCi/L, then according to the EPA your home exceeds the recommended radon level. This is the Danger Zone, and radon gas mitigation services will be suggested.

Radon Gas Mitigation

If after a test, it is discovered that a home has a high level of radon, it does not mean that the home can no longer be sold. High radon concentrations in homes can be fixed. Also, if the presence of radon gets discovered before a building is constructed, then, it is important that the building gets constructed with building techniques that are known to be radon resistant.

Due to the prevalence of radon in mid-Michigan, it is recommended that a radon test be carried out when ever a home or building is sold.
If a home has a radon level of  4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or more, it is important that this is address before it is bought or sold. Also, IF a new home is being constructed, then, ensure that radon resistant techniques are being used.
